Kentucky coach John Calipari made it clear after Thursday’s loss to Kansas State that he was proud of his team for what it accomplished during the season but also that UK had lost a game it had chances to win.

He took to Twitter Friday to explain even more of his feelings:

“I woke up this morning feeling as sick as I did last night after that game. This is going to hurt for a while for all of us. The players took it as hard as any team I’ve had when it ends,” Calipari posted on Twitter.

“What they accomplished this year can never be taken away. To play like they played all year – coming together, battling through adversity, continuing to work every day and representing all of us the way they did – is truly amazing.

“It’s hard for us to see the forest through the trees right now, but each of these kids gave everything they had, including in a game last night when we weren’t playing at our best. And we still had a chance to win!

“As a coach and as a fan, all you can ask is that they give their very best and that they do it as a team. This team tried to do that all year. Losing stinks, but I’m proud of each and every one of them.”

  1. Calipari is right about this loss hurting. UK will never have a better opportunity of winning No. 9 than they had in this tournament. Poor shooting will kill.

  2. Very proud of this team and how they played to the end. It was a learning process including Coach Cal and his guys but they did great. Yes they could have and should have won but it is one and done. God Bless all of them and next yr really looks good!!!

  3. I am over the hurt and try not to think about what could have or should have been. Hind sight is 20/20 and will drive you crazy. Yes, a trip to the final four would have been nice, then I remember it is just a game being played by a bunch of kids, and I have no control.
I hope several of these young men hang around for another year. I can just imagine a team with Washington, Richards, Vanderbilt, Jones, Gabriel, Baker, Diallo, Green and throw in the newbies, and I think you have team that can be a serious contender for the title.
Hope I get to see a healthy Vanderbilt and Baker in a UK uniform.

  4. Let’s be honest…this team was not a Final 4 caliber team. It was embarrassing to lose like they did, but that was their identity. There will be a significant number of players leaving this year one way or another. If they can pick up Montgomery next year, they have a shot at being a contender…if not, they will play 3 games in the Big Dance…again.
