As of now, Saturday’s Flamingo 5K in Nicholasville is still on

Many of you know, I try to run. Not fast or far, but just run.

This Saturday I am supposed to participate in the Flamingo 5K in Nicholasville. Why this race? One, it helps support the fight against cancer. Two, my granddaughter liked the race T-shirt because she loves flamingos.

However, running 3.1 miles in cold — AND SNOW — has me a little worried. That’s why I wanted to share this update for race organizers about Saturday’s 9 a.m. event.

Flamingo 5K Runners & Walkers,

Thank you for your support of our inaugural race on Saturday, April 7th.  We are truly blessed and blown away by the response to this race and our cause.  Over 525 have registered for the 5K, 1 Miler or Virtual Race…truly phenomenal for a 1st year race!

This is the first of at least 2 emails to provide you with race related updates and details.  We’ve been watching the crazy Central Kentucky weather forecast and planning with our generous hosts, the hard working staff at RJ Corman Railroad Group.  Our collective goal is to put on a first class & safe event and stay on schedule if at all possible since we’ve all planned to be there on Saturday.  The farm team at RJ Corman is prepared to salt & plow as needed on Saturday morning to provide for a safe/clear course.  We also will have use of their heated Coach Cravens Pavilion near the race start/finish area & indoor restrooms. We are very fortunate to have this race hosted at such a well equipped venue.

We do however understand that it isn’t only about clearing the course of possible snow but also the ability for a majority of our participants to safely travel to/from the race venue in Nicholasville on Saturday.  We will continue to monitor the weather forecast as we get closer to Saturday.

Many of you have asked about our Friday packet pickup.  This will be held on Friday, April 6th from 4-7pm at Central Baptist Church in Lexington (Address: 110 Wilson Downing Rd, Lexington, KY 40517).  The church is located right across from the southern entrance of Fayette Mall off Nicholasville Road.

We encourage all locals to pickup on Friday, especially if you think you may not make it to Saturday’s race.  This will get you your commemorative race T-shirt and bib and enter you in a raffle for $100 in gift cards.  You are allowed to pickup for friends and family members (No credentials or paperwork necessary).  We will also have a race day packet pickup from 7:30-9am at RJ Corman if that is more convenient.

We plan to provide a more comprehensive update tomorrow night with all of the race details you need to know to be ready for Saturday.

Thanks for your support (and prayers for a change in the weather)!  If you have questions in the meantime don’t hesitate to email
