West Jessamine junior offensive lineman Eli Cox commits to Kentucky

Eli Cox

By LARRY VAUGHT

As soon as he got a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky, it seemed only logical that West Jessamine offensive lineman Eli Cox was a perfect match for the Wildcats.

He grew up a Kentucky fan. His parents have UK football season tickets. He works out at the same gym as UK offensive lineman Drake Jackson.

It was also clear that playing for the home-state university meant something special to him and he also understood a quick commitment could be a boost for in-state recruiting after coach Mark Stoops failed to sign a single in-state player in his 2018 recruiting class.

Cox, who had 13 scholarship offers before Kentucky, said he would make a decision by July. Instead, he announced tonight on Twitter that he was Kentucky bound and his childhood dream had come true.

“It would be a big deal to represent my state. It carries a special sense of pride to play for the home state team,” Cox said last week. “It would also be a big thing to play close to home where my fans and family can support me because my phone blew up after I got the UK offer. My parents are really excited about the UK offer. Dad has always been a UK fan, and for my mom it would be a chance for me to stay close to home and come home on weekends in the offseason.”

“I wish I had a 100 like him,” West Jessamine coach John Gilliam said last week. “He is unbelievable. He is a great leader in the weight room and in the classroom. He has got an amazing GPA and (college entrance) test score. This is the first time I have talked with somebody from Harvard. He has a little bit of everybody coming through to talk to him and with the skills and size he has, more are going to keep coming.”

Cox left little doubt about his loyalty to UK.

“I will be a Wildcat! I’m 100% COMMITTED,” Cox posted on Twitter along with photos of him in a UK football uniform.

He becomes the fourth commitment in UK’s 2019 recruiting class joining Ohio safety Moses Douglas, Georgia linebacker KD McDnaiel and Florida safety Keontra Smith.
