Pendleton County senior Dontaie Allen put on a show for Kentucky coach John Calipari Thursday when he had 30 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, at the Under Armour Challenge in Georgia playing for M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs
That came a few hours after he got scholarship offers from Florida and Pittsburgh to go with ones he already had from West Virginia, Western Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Xavier and others. He picked up another one Saturday from St. Louis and during the Georgia event also added offers from Oklahoma, Iowa State and Illinois.
Allen took an unofficial visit to Kentucky in early June and has made no secret that he grew up a UK fan and would welcome a Kentucky offer.
Maybe one is about ready to come, too.
Pendleton County coach Keaton Belcher said Friday that Calipari and Allen’s mother had “been texting” Friday. Belcher said no scholarship offer had been made. On Saturday Belcher said it had actually been UK assistant coach Joel Justus, not Calipari, texting with the family.
“I just got some wrong information, but Joe Justus is definitely staying in touch with the family,” Belcher said.
Does he think a Kentucky offer might be coming? “Yes,” Belcher said.
Mustangs coach Steve Quattrocchi expected Allen to play well in Georgia and is not surprised with the attention he’s receiving from so many major coaches.
“He’s played great. Earned everything he’s getting,” Quattrocchi said.
And that would include a Kentucky offer if one does come.
