Former University of Kentucky football center Dave Hopewell is recovering in Cincinnati after having about four hours of heart surgery today.
Hopewell, an Alabama native, was part of UK’s 10-1 team in 1977 and also part of the 1976 Peach Bowl team. His sons, Dan and Andrew, both also played at Kentucky.
His daughter-in-law, Jennifer, said the former UK lineman, now an insurance agent in Harrodsburg, had not been feeling well for several weeks. He had a stress test Monday and was immediately admitted to the hospital before being transferred to Cincinnati for surgery in hopes he could have robotics surgery. Instead, he ended up having a traditional surgery that took longer.
Jennifer Hopewell said the doctor was “pleased with the outcome” and his wife, Teri, was with him tonight in recovery.
“He has been squeezing her hand every once in a while, so she’s hoping tomorrow he will be able to come off the ventilator and be alert enough to talk,” Jennifer Hopewell said.
Keep Hopewell, who has been a co-host on radio shows during UK football season with me in Danville, in your thoughts and prayers.
