Poised Gunnar Hoak, dynamic Terry Wilson both have Mark Stoops happy

Gunnar Hoak

ATLANTA, Ga. — As expected, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was asked about replacing quarterback Stephen Johnson at the SEC Media Days in Atlanta today.

He said he “liked where we’re at” with the quarterbacks and feels “very confident” going into preseason practice.

“Gunnar Hoak, he’s been in our system. He hasn’t played a college snap yet. He’s been in our system. He practiced a bunch. He knows what we are doing. He’s poised. He has always been poised since he stepped on campus,” Stoops said.

“He’s poised. He is accurate. He knows where to go with the football. He can make all the throws. I like what Gunnar’s doing. I look forward to watching him this summer.”

What about junior college transfer Terry Wilson?

“He’s a dynamic guy. I don’t know if I’ve seen it all yet. Until you get live, you really cannot see all his skill sets,” Stoops said. “Obviously you can see the way he can run. He makes all of the throws.

“He’s an unbelievable worker, but he’s dynamic. He’s a big, strong guy. And he’s dynamic with the ball in his hands, too. So I feel good about our options.”

  1. Two questions:
One: If Hoak is so good, why didn’t he ever take a snap last year when Johnson was hurt? That tells me the coaching staff had no confidence in him.

Two: If Wilson can make all the throws, why did he only complete around 55% of his passes in Junior College?

Not sure Gran has any idea about picking a QB or what offense best fits his players.
