Kentucky scholarship offer for Dontaie Allen should come today

Dontaie Allen

Even if D.J. Jeffries had not de-committed from Kentucky’s 2019 basketball recruiting class, a scholarship offer to Pendleton County senior Dontaie Allen was coming today.

No, Kentucky coach John Calipari doesn’t share recruiting information with me. But Calipari and has staff have patiently watched Allen’s progress this summer. Calipari went to see him play and then Calipari, not assistant coach Joel Justus, got in contact with Allen and his family.

Allen has his second unofficial visit to Kentucky today — but this time Calipari will be there. Anhyone who follows UK basketball knows that Calipari likes to offer scholarships in person, so expect the offer to come today.

But what might be a surprise is what Allen’s reaction might be. He admits he’s a life-long Kentucky fan. However, I still think he’s going to take time to consider his options rather than immediately say yes to Calipari.

The 6-6 Allen has about 25 scholarship offers now after his impressive play this summer. He’s jumped into the top 50 of the 2019 player rankings and is the leading candidate for Mr. Basketball honors in Kentucky.

But Allen is not one that seeks the limelight. If anything, he tries to avoid it and playing at Kentucky puts him in a big spotlight — especially as in-state player that UK fans will love from day one.

Allen may need time to decide if playing at UK is right for him. Being a UK fan is one thing. Playing at Kentucky is another.

Do I think he’ll accept the offer when one is made? Eventually, I do. It just might not be quite as quick as some expect or believe and if he does take his time, there’s nothing wrong with that.

  1. I hope he picks UK. Great athlete that I thinks deserves a ride playing for the Blue and White.

  2. I agree! This is a Hugh decision and UK is not for everyone. He needs to think things out carefully before he commits! If it is the best fit for him then great, we would love to have him. No reason to commit on the spot.

  3. We need a homegrown kid at UK
