Don’t limit Benny Snell until Kentucky has win locked up

Count me as one who will be fine if junior running back Benny Snell has his playing time limited if Kentucky dominates Murray State Saturday afternoon.

However, don’t count me as one who believes UK should totally rest Snell — UK does play Mississippi State Sept. 22 — no matter what. Players play and Snell is going to want to play and should feel that way.

It’s not just to add yards to position himself for postseason honors or to break the Kentucky all-time rushing record. He just wants to play because that’s what football players do.

“I don’t know I’m not gonna put a number that right now. You never know how things are going to go throughout the game,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. “We’ve talked about it all year, that we have confidence in the backs running in there as well. So we do anticipate using some of those guys here this week.”

Nothing wrong with that. Backup A.J. Rose needs more work and if UK takes care of business against Murray, then share the workload and get more work for Rose.

I know Terry Wilson needs all the reps he can get, but if the lead seems secure I hope we see sophomore quarterback Gunnar Hoak, too. If something happens to Wilson, having Hoak at least some limited reps would be nice.

Stoops said Thursday he wants to see what kicker Miles Butler can do. He has not attempted a field goal the first two games and twice Stoops passed up kicks of about 49 yards.

“I’d like to get him some field goals. I’d rather see him kicking extra points, but I’m sure he’ll get his opportunity, and I’m confident in him when he does,” Stoops said.

Just think back to games with Eastern Kentucky, Southern Miss and Austin Peay that UK expected to be walkovers. Southern Miss won at UK, Eastern lost on a UK TD pass in the final minute and Austin Peay played so well that Stoops had to bring injured starting quarterback Stephon Johnson back in the game.

“Some teams that come in, fans think it’s going to be very easy, but that’s not always the case. They have some really good players,” Stoops said.

True, but don’t look for that to be the case Saturday afternoon.

  1. Benny starts, but If UK has a substantial lead, get backup RB’s in. It will help this team to get reserves in at every position, if possible. Nothing like game time reps before a big crowd to build solid depth. Don’t take Murray lightly UK, get after them from the opening kick off.

    1. I would even like to see Smoke get a few carries against Murray.

  2. It appears that Danny Clark is going to be transferring out when new rule kicks in in 2 wks. That is a Bummer. I would take him over Hoak as my backup because of his arm and toughness even though Hoak might be more accurate. Not sure Hoak would have as good durability in SEC.

    1. Don’t know how you can say that about Hoak and his durability Mike. He is no little guy physically . He knows this offense like the back of his hand. His problem is simply a lack of playing time on Saturdays. I can see why Clark is leaving if what you say is accurate. His chances of seeing playing time are dwindling every day with Wilson and Hoak ahead, and a dual threat QB inbound out of Florida on signing day.
