If you don’t get a chance to attend Kentucky basketball press conferences, then you sometimes miss some playful banter that coach John Calipari enjoys.

No one feels the sting from Calipari’s playful jabs more than Lexington Herald-Leader beat writer Jerry Tipton, a reporter who is not afraid to ask questions that many others will not.

On Friday, Tipton asked Calipari what the showdown Saturday night with No. 1 Tennessee might mean to the bigger picture than just the SEC race.

“To me, nothing. You guys know,” Calipari said.

Tipton wondered what it meant nothing to Calipari. You have to love Calipari’s anwer.

“Jerry, have you been cutting grass all this time? Have you not watched?” Calipari said.

Cutting grass? How can you not love that?

“The bigger picture is always for us later. Whether it’s the league tournament or the league, yeah, we want to improve our seed and all that stuff and we want to be the best that we can be, but that’s not the emphasis here,” Calipari said.

  1. Ok, winning the regular season SEC and/or the SEC tournament means nothing to Calipari. Winning national titles means nothing to him also. All he cares about is getting kids into the NBA. Is this the coach we should have at Kentucky?
