Mark Stoops adds Pennsylvania defensive back

By LARRY VAUGHT

Finding more help for the secondary was a priority for Kentucky during the second national football signing period and coach Mark Stoops added a big recruit today when Pennsylvania corner MJ Devonshire signed with the Wildcats during a signing ceremony in Aliquippa, Pa.

The 5-11, 165-pound Devonshire made an official visit to UK in late January  and picked the Cats over Pittsburgh and West Virginia because he said it felt like home and campus was “cool.”

It certainly helped that UK could have five defensive backs off this year’s team picked in the upcoming NFL draft

Devonshire is the ninth-ranked player overall  in Pennsylvania.

  1. Disappointing that Stoops and staff didn’t have better closing percentage at year’s end from 10 win season and bowl victory. Had four 4*’s targeted with 2-3 very likely to sign and last 2 picked LSU. Stoops stealing Cal’s script for “losing out on the bigs at very end”. Reportedly Cal and staff no longer in running for Edwards. I think we are also handicapped by a week recruiting staff other than Cal.

  2. UT ends up with (12) 4 star recruits and we end up with 4….that certainly won’t cut it. We are only ranked ahead of Mizzou and Vandy in SEC.

    1. I agree Mike that being ranked 12th in the SEC and 34th nationally will not get UK to the next level. I don’t care what Stoops says. Star rankings don’t mean anything many say. Yeah, well tell that to Alabama and Georgia.

  3. Have we ever get many 4-5 stars players in our football program, no folks why would a big time player wants to come to a school that’s not in a National Title contention year in and year out I appreciate what Stools has done to our football program regardless what people think. Were just in the wrong football conference to contend to the likes of Alabama Georgia, Lsu and Anburn. It’s not going to happen folks and never will there leap and bound ahead of us has been for years.

    1. Cats79 you are right, generally speaking, but it is Stoops’ job to recruit top football talent if he wants to compete in this league, and nationally. As a football fan I expect UK to compete for SEC championships and national championships in football just like you basketball bennies expect from Calipari. UK will never get there signing classes ranked 12th in the SEC year in year out. These coaches are not good enough to coach up a roster full of 3* players and compete in this league against overwhelming talent. Plus, UK lost a ton of talent off this team, especially the secondary and at RB, and LB room. A 9-3 season and citrus bowl win should have gotten UK a little better results is all I’m seeing.

  4. Update……just reported that 3 seniors will be leaving the program and biggest loss is Kenegra Daniels. UT also just picked up 5* OT to move them up to 12.

  5. Lets face it. The elite SEC teams sign 4 and 5 star players. KY signs 3 and 4 star players. This is why we will not challenge for the SEC East much less win the SEC title. I have a feeling that 2019 will be a 6-6 year at best.

  6. Catman….think you might be pretty close..possibly 1 less or 1 more. Think next year might be truer test of Coach’s ability as he had some key players at key positions to pull the cart this year. Hate to see King leave.
