In case you might have been caught up in the Kentucky Derby controversy, one of the nation’s top prep players in the 2020 recruiting class narrowed his list of college choices to four a few hours after the Derby — and Kentucky was on it.
Jalen Johnson, a top five players the 2020 class, confirmed on social media that he’s down to Kentucky, Duke, Arizona and home-state Wisconsin.
Duke is seen as the frontrunner for Johnson even though he recently told Lexington Herald-Leader recruiting writer Ben Roberts that Kentucky was his “dream school” growing up because of John Wall. However, Johnson has also been very complimentary of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
The 6-8, 215-pound Johnson is a versatile, all-around player who is expected to be one of the top picks in the 2021 NBA draft.
He’s already made an official visit to Duke and likely will make a college choice before his senior season starts. Kentucky coach John Calipari made his first official in-home visit of the spring recruiting session to see Johnson.
Johnson is also friends with three other Duke targets — Scottie Barnes, B.J. Boston and Jeremy Roach. All are five-star players ranked in the top 15 in the 2020 recruiting class. All three are also major Kentucky recruiting targets.
