Hal Mumme coaching with Bob Stoops, the brother of Kentucky coach Mark Stoops? How could you not love that?
Bob Stoops has hired Mumme as the offensive coordinator for the Dallas franchise in XFL league that is set to start play next year.
Mumme, a former head coach at Kentucky known for his wide-open Air Raid offense, was the offensive coordinator of the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football but left the team before it played a game — and before the league folded recently in the middle of its first season.
Bob Stoops was defensive coordinator at Florida before he became head coach at Oklahoma and hired Mike Leach, Mumme’s offensive coordinator at Kentucky then, to run his offense
Mumme had been head coach at Iowa Wesleyan and Valdosta State before getting the head job at UK. He left in 2001 after a NCAA investigation started and then was head coach at Southeastern Louisiana, New Mexico State, McMurry and Belhaven. He was offensive coordinator at Southern Methodist in 2013 and Jackson State in 2018.
The XFL will start its season Feb. 8, with eight teams and now Mumme will be part of it and have another chance to showcase his offensive creativity.
