Pikeville receiver Jackson Hensley didn’t get a scholarship offer from Kentucky after attending camp in Lexington last weekend, but he continued his impressive camp performances.

The 6-0, 185-pound Hensley said he felt like he did “really well” at camp. He ran the 40-yard dash in a laser-time 4.46 seconds.

A week earlier he got himself noticed with his play during a camp at Wake Forest where his athleticism and competitive spirit impressed various coaches from other schools along with Wake Forest coaches. He ran the 40 there in 4.49 seconds.

Hensley was timed in 4.48 seconds at The Opening Regional in Charlotte in May, so his speed should be no mystery to colleges because it is staying so consistent. He also has been measured at 37 inches in the vertical jump more than once.

His most recent scholarship offer came from Yale. His other offers include Cornell and Dartmouth. He has interest from Purdue, Louisville, Wake Forest, Marshall and Western Kentucky.

What about Kentucky?

“UK didn’t offer,” Hensley said. “ I talked to a lot of the coaches, so it’s a possibility, but I think some things will have to fall my way.”

Speculation is rising that Male three-star receiver Izayah Cummings might commit to UK. He has Louisville, Purdue, Virginia, Wake Forest and West Virginia also in his top six. Cummings helped Male win the Kentucky 6A state title in 2018 and had 41 receptions for a team-high 597 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s listed among the nation’s top 500 players in the 2020 class by one recruiting service and a top five player in Kentucky.

Hensley is not as highly rated but last year he caught 39 passes for 829 yards and 16 scores and ran 15 times for 235 yards and two scores. He also had 50 tackles and one interception that he returned 43 yards for a score. He had 154 yards receiving and two touchdowns along with seven solo tackles in the 21-20 loss to Beechwood in the Class A state title game.

Hensley knows he has to find a way to get Power-Five teams to give him a legitimate chance. However, he also understands he has some other really good options.

“My most recent offer is from Yale,” Hensley said. “Definitely one that’s hard to pass up.”

Yes it is.
