Count Hal Mumme as a Mark Stoops backer.
The former University of Kentucky head football coach was a guest on Michael Bennett’s “Just The Tip” morning radio show Tuesday — and they let me even join them.
Mumme, as always, didn’t shy away from offering opinions and I have got to admit I was glad that Bennett asked him what he thought about the job Stoops was doing. There was a time I thought Mumme was on the verge of making UK a consistent winner before the bottom fell out. Now Stoops seems ready to do it just like Rich Brooks appeared ready to do before he retired.
“I have watched them play several times each year when I can,” Mumme, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Dallas XFL team, said when asked about Stoops. “He has done fabulous job and is a phenomenal coach.
“I was talking to one of former administrators (at UK) and he says the great thing is he has such terrific Ohio connections and that has really helped recruiting. He is going about everything the right way. He had a terrific season last year and probably will have another one this season.”
Kentucky did go 10-3 with a Citrus Bowl win last year but many national analysts seem to think with the departure of Josh Allen, Benny Snell and others that UK will not even make a bowl game this year.
“For a lot of the national media, it’s just easy to say they are waiting for basketball season (at Kentucky),” Mumme said. “Every once in a while there’s an anomaly year but if you look you can see this program growing. He is getting great players and I think they are going to keep winning.”
