FRANKLIN, Ohio — If this was the final Ohio UK Convention, it was a great way to end.

Convention director Jim Porter, 81, announced a few months ago this would be his last year as director and he confirmed Saturday that no one yet had indicated he or she was ready to assume the role of director.

“As I stand here today, I don’t have anybody today to take this over. If someone takes over, they can have my mailing list,” Porter said. “I don’t know if it will happen or not. That’s about all I know about the future.”

It was a day to celebrate Porter and his family. Guest speakers included former UK basketball players Mike Pratt, Reggie Hanson and Maci Morris along with Kentucky Sports Radio’s Ryan Lemond, UK associate athletics director Tony Neely, UK Radio Network’s Leach and Cameron Mills Radio’s Tina Cox. All paid tribute to Porter. Neely even brought a framed UK basketball jersey with Porter’s name on the back.

The convention set an attendance record of 168 ranging in age from 6 months to 92. Fans were there from Tennessee and even Wisconsin.

Here’s a look at some of the day’s highlights.

  1. Larry, thanks for your article and for the pictures you posted! It was a real pleasure seeing you again and hearing all the speakers who attended. Jim Porter did something that I’ve never seen anywhere else. He is to be highly commended for organizing such a fine, fun event in the middle of the summer to give us rabid UK fans a tease of the season to come. His enthusiasm is second to none and boy, does he keep things rolling! I thought Tina Cox was a riot and am happy to now put a face to the person whose comments and articles I’ve been reading on your site for years. Of course, the fun is in being with Kentucky folks and fans! Hope someone can pick it up and run with it, but if not, it’s been a great memory and experience!

    1. Always great to see and talk to you Judi. I am with you on the convention. It was fantastic. So glad you made the trip. And glad you got to meet and hear Tina — she is one of a kind

  2. Another great article, Larry! We really enjoyed your photos, Hilda was showing em to some of her customers this morning at breakfast. Thank you for attending again this year.
