For the 11th time, Matthew Mitchell has had a team start a season 4-0 going into Thursday night’s home game against Morehead.
That start has Mitchell’s team ranked 13th in the latest Associated Press poll
“I think with what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last decade plus and the reputation that we continue to build here through the hard work of so many great people and so many great players, I think that we are a team that people get excited to play,” Mitchell said Wednesday.
“Also, no matter what, if you have a ranking early on in the season, you really haven’t done anything to earn that, it’s just been assigned to you, and it’s based on last year’s activity and the best guess someone has of what may happen this year.”
Kentucy’s start that includes road wins at Middle Tennessee and Virginia may have surprised some.
“There is always opportunity, I think, early in the season, to make a name for yourself by being a ranked team, so we’ve spent so little time focused on what that number is. I don’t know what it is this week. We’re trying to get better, so it certainly doesn’t add any pressure from our end,” Mitchell said.
“What it is for us is, we’re just trying to be really good at the end of the season and if this team will keep working the way that they’ve been working, then we have a chance to do that.”
