Auburn QB Joey Gatewood transferring to Kentucky

By KEITH TAYLOR, Kentucky Today

LEXINGTON — Kentucky added another quarterback to its roster for next season and beyond.

Auburn’s Joey Gatewood, a redshirt freshman,  announced via social media that he will be transferring to Kentucky. Gatewood, a redshirt freshman and 5-star signal caller with the Tigers, entered the NCAA transfer portal in October and made a verbal commitment to the Wildcats on Thursday.

Gatewood , 6-foot-5, 233, played in eight games for Auburn and threw for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Out of the Wildcat formation, he rushed for 176 yards and had three touchdowns. He battled Bo Nix for the starting job last August and impressed Tigers coach Gus Malzahn.

“Both of them are very athletic,” he said. “They can create things when things break down. They have big-time arms.”

Malzahn said Gatewood “took the next step” during last year’s spring game.

“Joey’s a big guy,” the Auburn coach said. “He’s a big guy. He can run. He’s got a big arm. And I think he gives you a lot of versatility as a play caller.”

Gatewood of Jacksonville, led Bartam High School to the Florida Class 7A finals and threw for 1,468 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 1.100 yards and 16 scores as a senior. He also ran as a sprinter in track and field and appeared in the Under Armour All-American game.

  1. WOW!!..I am afraid to check my heartbeat..this is gigantic. This dude reportedly dual threat and real deal.

    1. Ha ha ha ha!! You still around?

      1. Yes….still here rent free in your head! If Mr Cardinal really in your head you do need need serious intervention.

    2. Another nugget of Mike’s “unscripted eloquence” 🤣😂🤣😂.

  2. This is a huge get!! I love where we are headed. GO CATS!!!

  3. Yes it is a huge pickup. Shame we go to wait another year to see him play. I love the way Stoops got this program headed.

  4. WOW WOW WOW!!!!! I think it says a lot about the coaching staff including the much maligned O C Eddie Gran. A kid with that size, speed and skill set could have chosen a lot of schools. Way to go cats. We have officially entered a new era of UK football. Top players are now looking our way from all across the country. UK has earned some FB cred even if the media doesn’t believe it, We will be picked last in the SEC East again next year. LOL

    1. Says a whole, whole lot about UK and Gran and everything connected with UK football

  5. Good pick up for the UK football team. Gives UK another option.

  6. But, …,.but we’re we not assured that UK would never be in contention for players with the credentials of a Gatewood ? ?
Now look at the hypocrite!! First post on the thread (He really has no other life) while totally ignoring the reasons that brought the kid to Kentucky.
An ignorant joke with an agenda!!

    1. TD
