Kentucky has yet to offer senior Peyton Watson — a 6-7 wing from Long Beach, Calif. who is the top rated player in California in the 2021 recruiting class — but it sure seems like it could be coming.
Yahoo Sports and Rivals.com basketball writer Krysten Peeks says Watson has been working out with future Wildcats Devin Askew, Terrence Clarke and BJ Boston recently.
“I think Kentucky has not offered yet because he (UK coach John Calipari) wants to see him in person before he offers,” Peek said.
Calipari and his staff have not got to see Watson — or any player — play since COVID-19 hit the U.S.
“He is not a finished product yet. He has grown a lot. He should be playing in a tournament hopefully in Las Vegas at the end of July I will be at and I think he will dominate,” Peek said.
Watson averaged 23.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for Long Beach Poly to move into the top 15 overall in the 2021 recruiting class.
“He’s got great length and athleticism,” Peek said. “He’s become a better scorer and shooter.”
About a year ago he had scholarship offers only from Grand Canyon, Montana and Santa Clara. Now he’s got offers from Oregon, Arizona, Michigan, Washington, Maryland and USC.
Kentucky coaches apparently have been in frequent contact with Watson who has the talent and versatility that would seem to be a perfect fit in Calipari’s system at UK.
