Ryan Lemond: “Oscar ‘IS’ UK sports

By LARRY VAUGHT

Today on vaughtsviews.com is going to be officially Oscar Combs Day.

The legendary University of Kentucky media personality announced Thursday he was going a “different direction” and would no longer be part of the University of Kentucky Radio Network presume show for basketball or football.

Obviously Kentucky fans took to Twitter to thank Combs for all he’s done for UK sports since founding The Cats’ Pause in 1976. But Combs is just as beloved and respected by media members of all venues and age groups.

Few people I have ever known seem to have enjoyed their work more than Krista Voda Kelley did when she was with WLEX-TV sports covering not only University of Kentucky sports but also high school sports, the Kentucky Derby, the NFL and major league baseball.

She had a certain charm that came across on air and had a knack for making almost every interview/story special. And that contagious smile never seemed to go away.

Alan Cutler will join us on WPBK-FM 102.9 Tuesday morning

If you watch any Lexington TV sports, you know my buddy Alan Cutler, the sports anchor/direct at WLEX-TV (Channel 18).

He can be controversial. He can be opinionated. But he can also be right and no one is more passionate about his job than Cutler.

He’ll join Tim Estes and myself on WPBK-FM 102.9 Tuesday from 7:30-8 a.m. (wpbk.com) to discuss a little bit of everything. Certainly we will talk about the upcoming NCAA Tournament and coach John Calipari, a man Cutler has known a long time.

TBF-VAUGHTS-VIEWSWriting for www.lex18.com has been a new experience for me and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead working with the sports team of Alan Cutler, Dorian Craft and Keith Farmer as well as other at WLEX-TV.

Hopefully those of you who come here regularly to check for UK news will also make sure to go to the WLEX site to see my stories as well as much, much UK coverage provided by the WLEX sports staff.

Joining WLEX-TV, Cutler, Farmer and Craft a special blessing and opportunity

TBF-VAUGHTS-VIEWSWhen I made the decision to leave The Advocate-Messenger after 41 years, I was not sure what the future might hold. I knew I wanted to find work, but only the right kind of work.

Today I couldn’t be happier by WLEX-TV’s decision to let me be part of their online sports coverage. To have a chance to work with Alan Cutler, Keith Farmer and Dorian Craft — the real WLEX-TV sports pros —and the other great folks at the station (especially you Melissa Ratliff) is like a dream come true for me.
