He completed just 10 of 24 passes against Vanderbilt, but UK won and quarterback Stephen Johnson offered no excuses for his lack of accuracy.

He wouldn’t even use the high winds as a reason for so many incompletions and certainly did not mention the wrist injury that coach Mark Stoops talked about on his weekly radio show Monday night.

After waiting two years to become Kentucky’s top quarterback, Drew Barker is going to be out at least the next three to four weeks — and maybe longer — because of a lingering back injury from this summer that no one at UK had disclosed until he went out after three plays against New Mexico State last week.

Quarterback Drew Barker did not practice Tuesday because of his lingering back issues and offensive coordinator Eddie Gran said Stephen Johnson will be the starter Saturday night against South Carolina.

“Stephen is be the guy and they’re still getting evaluated and still getting in stuff with Drew. That’s all we know right now. Right now, Stephen’s the guy,” Gran said.

Johnson played well in UK’s 62-42 win over New Mexico State after Barker went out after throwing an interception on the first series. Kentucky amassed almost 700 yards of offense with Johnson at quarterback.

Based on what quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw has seen, Kentucky starting quarterback Drew Barker and backup Stephen Johnson are “both ready to play and ready to go win” when UK opens the season Sept. 3 against Southern Mississippi.

So where does that leave freshman Gunnar Hoak?

“We’re going to rotate him with the scout team and also prepare him in case he has to play and stuff like that. We’re also going to do the same thing with the other quarterbacks so that anybody else is ready to play,” Hinshaw said.

Stoops names Barker starting QB; other Blue-White takeaways

Kentucky’s Blue-White Game Saturday gave fans their final chance to see Mark Stoops’ fourth UK team until the season opens in September.

The biggest takeaway from the game is that Stoops said Drew Barker came out of spring as the No. 1 quarterback. He was 12 of 18 passing for 156 yards and two scores with one interception Saturday.

“Drew has been consistent the whole spring. He needs to stay consistent with his approach in way he is handling everything on and off the field,” Stoops said.

Then he said Barker was the starting quarterback coming out of spring practice.

Hinshaw impressed by Drew Barker’s willingness to learn

Maybe Drew Barker sometimes had off-field issues his first two season at Kentucky. However, so far new offensive coordinator Darin  Hinshaw has nothing but praise for what Barker has done since he arrived at UK.

“Since I came in here, Drew has been just nipping at it to learn. He’s been a sponge. Now some of his, like I say, is like riding a bike. He’s got to go fall and make mistakes. He’s not going to be perfect out there right now. But from Day 1 to Day 9, he’s improved,” Hinshaw said after Tuesday’s practice.

Did Darin Hinshaw take shots at past UK coaching?

New Kentucky quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw has been very open talking about the challenges he faces putting together the offense at Kentucky.

He talked to media members Tuesday morning and seem to take a little bit of a shot at former offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.

“I don’t know what they’ve done in the past, but their footwork wasn’t where it needs to me,” said Hinshaw.
