New greens, a couple of revamped holes and 90+ degree sunny days welcomed both veterans and newbies to The Players, golf’s unofficial 5th major. As the second round concluded, Kentucky’s own J.B. Holmes sits on the first page of the leaderboard just 2 strokes back in third place at -7.

Q. I was just wondering if you could talk a little bit about where you’re at in your career now, having won again on Tour, Presidents Cup, a Ryder Cup, all of that after the health ailments that you had. Did you ever see yourself in this position after having to deal with all that?

J.B. HOLMES: I mean, I hoped I would get back there. I had some injuries there for years that held me back. I felt like — making these teams and winning tournaments, I felt like that’s something I definitely had the talent to do and I should be doing.

Kentuckian J.B. Holmes likely will play in the Ryder Cup matches this afternoon in Minnesota. It will be his second Ryder Cup appearance.

JOHN DEVER: Welcome back to the 41st Ryder Cup. I’m joined by J.B. Holmes. J.B., thank you for stopping by. This is your second Ryder Cup, so I want to ask you, do you see any similarities in the team room perhaps that are comparable between 2008 and what you’re dealing with now?

Getting to host The Leach Report when Tom Leach needs a day off is a challenge because there’s no way to be as good as Tom. However, it’s also a lot of fun because the listeners and the special guests willing to be on the show.

This Tuesday is I get another opportunity to do that and I couldn’t be happier with the three guests who will join me.

J.B. Holmes has “fun” finishing third in Open Championship

Former University of Kentucky golfer J.B. Holmes had another 2-under par 69 at The Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland Sunday to finish 6-under par for the tournament and in third place. Of course, that was 14 shots behind winner Henrik Stenson and 11 behind Phil Mickelson.

That’s one reason NBC-TV showed so little of Mickelson during the final round — but it still was no excuse for basically just ignoring him.

Here’s what Holmes said during his post-round press conference Sunday.

J.B. Holmes, Chase Parker in U.S. Open field

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky men’s golfers J.B. Holmes and Chase Parker are among the field for the 116th U.S. Open Championship being held this year at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Pa., June 16-19.

Holmes, currently ranked No. 19 in the world, will compete in the seventh U.S. Open of his career. His best finish came in 2014 when he tied for 17th overall. Holmes has four career PGA Tour victories and has suited up for the 2005 USA Walker Cup Team, 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup Team and the 2015 U.S. President’s Cup Team.
